Now that I am aware of the many uses of technology in the classroom, I have observed it is more teacher centered. How can we change that approach and make it student centered? Currently I am addressing that at my campus but would like more ideas. Prek-5th grade
Perhaps a method of making the technology more user based would be to incorporate more collaborative tools such as wikis and blogs to the curriculum. By having students post entries in a course blog, it makes them become a part of the learning experience. Also, by having a course wiki and asking students to post course related assignments on their own which would make students interact on a different level within the course. Also, you could include activities where students create their own presentations using technology such as Photostory.
ReplyDeleteA great way to make the use of technology student centered is to make learning in general student centered and then add the technology where it adds value.
ReplyDeleteA good strategy might be using a tic-tac-toe assignment board. For a given unit students have 9 different projects to choose from and they have to choose 3. This is really a differentiated instruction strategy and it fits with student centered teaching.
If teachers were willing to put in a few relevant technology options as choices then they could ease into it. Writing is a good starting point since there are a variety of options in the area of publishing (newsletters, flyers, newspaper articles, brochures) and Digital storytelling (photostory, voicethread, podcasting, Animoto,etc.)...
The cool thing about offering a variety of options is the fact that the teacher gets to see unique projects. The downside can be the variety of grading options... Rubrics are certainly the way to go...
Luis you have a point about allowing them to post on blogs and wikis but, everything is blocked at our district! I think that the teachers need to be retrained on how to actually let go of the teaching in the classroom. Sometimes teachers are scared of allowing the students to teach the class more less let them use technology in their lessons and learning.
